Trivia

• Matt Stone and Trey Parker's normal voices can be heard during the music video.
• Kenny does not have any individual lines in this episode, but is audibly heard grunting with Stan and Cartman at Butters' house.
• The shot seen in the promotional image of Stan's video is never seen in the episode itself.
• In "Quest for Ratings", the Raisins Girls were shown in new, skimpier uniforms. However, in this episode, they have seemingly reverted to their old, original uniforms.
• Multiple color swaps of children can be seen with they are cheering and when they are booing Stan. The color swaps include Heidi Turner, Millie Larsen, Nelly, Jenny Simons, Meagan Ridley, Lannie, Beth, Douglas, Lola, Esther, Isla, Theresa, the boy with brown hair and red shirt and Kelly Rutherford-Menskin.
• The aircraft used by Stan is a Boeing 777-300ER, an elongated twin-engine aircraft whose appearance is distinguished by having 5 exits.
• The beginning lunchroom shot is reused from "T.M.I.", though the group of girls shown sitting at the table are completely different from the ones in that episode.
• Stan Marsh exits San Diego International Airport through its second aircraft terminal.
• The three singers parody "The Kingston Trio", a band from the late '50s who helped establish "folk-pop". One of the members, Nick Reynolds, was a native of San Diego.
• The background participants included in Stan's video are majority of the 4th graders (including Bill Allen, Fosse McDonald and DogPoo Petuski) as well as: cheerleaders, the Goth Kids, the basketball team, the Vampire Kids, the 6th graders (including the leader and his two friends), the Ginger Kids, the Raisins Girls, the Kindergartners, Casey Miller, Bridon Gueermo, Thad Jarvis, Mike Cooper, Dougie O'Connell, Kip Drordy, Pete Thelman and Tammy Warner.
• Timmy joins in on the booing instead of saying "Timmy".

References to Popular Culture

• The bullying behavior of Grandma Stotch parodies that of "Grandma Dolarhyde" in the 2002 film Red Dragon, with some of her dialogue being a word-for-word duplication. Her voice is credited as 'Donna Dooby'; but with this as the actress's only credit, rumors have long circulated that the name was a pseudonym for Ellen Burstyn, the actress who provided the voice of Grandma Dolarhyde.
• Stan's video, "Make Bullying Kill Itself", is a parody of the "lip dub" genre. The video as well as Stan's inserted laugh ("In America, haw-haw") specifically parodies this anti-bullying YouTube video by Cypress Ranch High School.
• Stan's success of the "Make Bullying Kill Itself" video leads to his public breakdown in San Diego, California; this is a reference to Jason Russell of the Kony 2012 viral video campaign, who was hospitalized after being found naked and screaming in San Diego..
• "Captain Kangaroo" was mentioned in this episode. It is a children's TV program which ran from the 1950s to the 1980s.
• "San Diego" suddenly playing at the end of the episodes is an example of a Gainax Ending. Named after the Japanese anime studio of the same name, a Gainax Ending refers to an ending that makes no sense. A prime example being the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The fact that a penguin appears during the song may be a nod to the character of Pen-Pen.
• When Stan goes to San Diego, Jerry Sanders, the mayor of San Diego, is shown advertising San Diego in a mock commercial. He is surrounded by a green blur, indicating a poorly-performed greenscreen.
• As Stan's taxi drives through the Gaslamp Quarter, standing underneath a lamp is Boltman, who was the unofficial mascot of the San Diego Changers for over 20 years. The mascot was eventually retired in 2018 after the Chargers moved to Los Angeles.

Continuity

• Butters assumes his alter ego, Professor Chaos, is a way to gain confidence and stand up against his abusive Grandma. Professor Chaos was last seen in "Coon vs. Coon & Friends".
• In Stan's video, a boy holds a sign with "Bullying is so 2000-Late!" written on it. The catch phrase "2000 and late" has been used in a few episodes. The Black Eyed Peas made it popular with the song "Boom Boom Pow".
• This episode marks the first appearance of Grandma Stotch. She was mentioned by name only in "Butters' Very Own Episode", "Freak Strike", "Margaritaville" and "Reverse Cowgirl".
• As mentioned above, many South Park characters return since their last appearance in older seasons; such as Jesus, Raisins Girls, the 6th Grader Leader, Dougie, Bridon Gueermo, Damien Thorn, the Kindergartners, Kip Drordy, and Pete Thelman. In addition, many formerly one-off characters make their second appearance in this episode, such as Thad Jarvis, the Vampire Kids, Mike, Casey Miller, the basketball team, and the cheerleaders.
• Cartman uses the slang "vajayjay" for "vagina", as he did in "Reverse Cowgirl".
• This is the second time someone calls Butters' Professor Chaos costume 'gay', the first time being in "My Future Self n' Me".

• At the school assembly, many children can be seen twice or more in the crowd, as well as some alternate versions of characters. This includes Tommy Turner, Bill Allen, Sally Turner, Jenny, Kevin Stoley, Nate, Bebe Stevens, Annie Knitts, Francis, and some unnamed characters.
