South Park: Snow Day! is a sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole. It was released on March 26, 2024. The game was developed by Question LLC and published by THQ Nordic.[1]

Unlike its two predecessors, it features three-dimensional gameplay, as well as a co-op multiplayer mode where up to three additional players can join the game.

Plot

Join Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny, in three-dimensional glory, to celebrate the most magical day in any young child’s life—a snow day! Grab up to three friends and battle your way through the snow-piled streets of South Park on a quest to save the world and enjoy a day without school.

Gameplay

Combat

Main article: Combat in South Park: Snow Day!

South Park: Snow Day! is a 3D action-adventure game that allows up to four players in a cooperative mode. Players may use various types of Powers and Weapons to fight off enemies, aided with Upgrade Cards, Bullshit Cards and Perks.

There are five chapters that make up the main story line of the game. When players have completed the tutorial, they will be taken to the Kupa Keep, which serves as a lobby prior to starting a chapter. Players may begin a mission by interacting with the War Table, and thereafter proceed to the nearby portal. At the start of each chapter, players choose one of three Upgrade Cards and Bullshit Cards. Additional Upgrade Cards and/or Dark Ritual Cards will be available through completing multiple tasks or stages within the chapter. The tasks given during the chapter are not universal and may not follow the same path at every instance.

There are no checkpoints in the game. Therefore, players must restart the chapter from the beginning if they choose to leave the mission midway, or if all of the New Kids are defeated during combat.

Currencies

There are three different currencies adopted in the game:

  • Toilet Paper ToiletPaper.png: Picked up through looting treasure chests and other containers. They can be used to raise the rarity of a selected Upgrade Card, or to reshuffle the deck of Cards. Unused Toilet Paper held at the end of the chapter may not be brought forward.
  • Dark Matter DarkMatter.png: Picked up through looting treasure chests and other containers, or rewarded from Infernal Pacts. They can be used to unlock Perks. Unlike Toilet Paper, players get to keep their accumulated Dark Matter after completing a chapter.
  • Platinum Points PlatinumPoints.png: Rewarded from Achievements in the game, or Infernal Pacts. They can be used to purchase costumes from the Bazaar.

Character Customization

Following the game's prologue, players are given the opportunity to create their avatar with various costumes, hairstyles and emotes. After completing the tutorial, players may visit the Bazaar situated in the Kupa Keep to change their customization.

Background

Development

A new South Park game was first hinted following the signing of a new deal between ViacomCBS and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker in August 2021. With the new deal valued at $900 million, both Stone and Parker intended to invest in a series of new ventures which included a "3D video game."[3]

In January 2022, Question Games was revealed to be the developer for the game, having released a job listing for a lead level designer. The job description would have required applicants to have at least "one multiplayer game as a senior level designer or have equivalent relevant experience," implying that the game would incorporate multiplayer elements.[4]

Pre-order Bonus

Players who pre-ordered the game received the Underpants Gnome Cosmetics Pack for free.

Promotional

The game was first teased during the 2022 THQ Nordic Digital Showcase released on August 13, 2022. Towards the end of the showcase, the closing message reads "As of today, THQ Nordic (HandyGames not included) has 43 games in development thereof 26 still announced AFTER this showcase", with "26" promptly scratched off. The screen then transitions into South Park Digital Studios logo, complemented with Randy Marsh shouting "Hot, hot, hothothot hot! Urgh, oh, it's coming!" in a similar manner from "More Crap".[5]

A reveal trailer for the game, which included its finalized title, was premiered during the following THQ Nordic Digital Showcase released on August 12, 2023.[6]

On March 1, 2024, a demo play on Xbox was announced as part of a pop-up event for March 8-10, 2024 to be held in London.[7][8] Further pop-up events are planned for four other cities, namely[9]:

  • Munich, Germany (March 14-16, 2024)[10]
  • Mexico City, Mexico (April 5-7, 2024)[11]
  • São Paulo, Brazil (April 19-21, 2024)[12]
  • Tokyo, Japan (May 3-5, 2024)[13]

When the game came out on March 26, 2024, the Xbox twitter account announced four custom South Park: Snow Day Xbox Series X consoles for a giveaway, each console themed after one of the boys' fantasy personas.[14] This was later announced by South Park's Instagram account as well.[15]

Scrapped Content

Like the previous two games, this one was also discovered to have things that did not make it into the final game, although this time very few compared to the previous games:

  • In the game's first trailer, there is an opening sequence showing Cartman in the middle of the town that is covered in snow. This was probably done especially for the trailer, to give an idea of how the characters would be animated in 3D.
    • His line "It's a snow day, the most magical of days, in a young child's life" was placed in the opening of the final game right before the transition from 2D to 3D.
  • On South Park Studios' official video channel showing the process of bringing South Park to 3D, some concept art is shown, and one of them shows the game's enemies. There would have been more types of 6th grader enemies in the game besides the Bruisers, but this idea seems to have been discarded very quickly, as only sketches of these characters are noticed.
  • Ike Broflovski and Gerald Broflovski do not appear at any point in the game, however, they can be found in the files.
    • Models of Ike, along with his voice audio and accessories can be found in the game files. Ike would have been a key subject for the game's tutorial, as well as the first chapter.[16]

Trivia

  • At first, Wendy was considered a scrapped character, as she had not been found by anyone, but could be found in the game files. That is until a Reddit user made a post where he saw Wendy in the background during the last boss fight with the giant worm.[17]
    • However, there are still several audio clips for Wendy found in the game files (in all languages available in the game), indicating that she would likely have a more prominent role.
  • The official website and Steam page for the game initially listed Japanese as one of the available foreign language audio and subtitles. This was promptly changed with both platforms listing Japanese for subtitles only.[18]
  • This is the only South Park game to have free downloadable content.
  • Bulrog, Cartman's ninja alter ego who appears in his boss fight as a wizard, is named Balrog in the game files, possibly a typo.
