References to Popular Culture

  • The scene with Darryl and his group marching with tiki torches and confederate flags, shouting "You will not replace us!" is a parody of Unite the Right rally, an event led by white nationalists at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. back in August 2017.
    • The altercation between Randy and the protestor with pepper spray is a reference to Christopher Cantwell, a white-nationalist protester who was arrested for pepper-spraying counter-protesters on the first night of the protests.
    • Randy's line, "hurt from both sides" is a reference to Donald Trump's speech on the aftermath of Unite the Right rally, condemning white nationalists and the counter-protesters.
    • One of the marchers is wearing the same helmet and chest protector as Master Chief John-117 from the Halo video game series.
    • One of the marchers has blue paint on half of his face and a wooden shield, in reference to William Wallace from the film Braveheart.
    • During the second protest march to Best Buy, one of the protesters appears to be modeled after a Klingon from the Star Trek franchise.
  • Randy and Sharon Marsh's show "White People Renovating Houses" is a parody of the various home renovation shows on HGTV such as Fixer Upper, the Flip or Flop franchise, and Property Brothers, where the hosts help couples shop and then renovate old homes.
    • More specifically, it may be a parody of Flip or Flop Vegas, as the husband on the show is an MMA Fighter and contractor (Randy claims to train in MMA when he is not doing construction), while the wife focuses on the design concepts, which Sharon states that she does in the introduction.
  • During the trial, Randy mentions that there are already "Gay People Renovating Houses", "Las Vegas People Renovating Houses", "Texas People Flipping Houses", and "Little People Flipping Big Houses", referring to actual TV shows:
  • Many of Randy's design concepts, such as an open concept kitchen with an island, quartz countertops, and subway tiles are frequently featured in the house flipping shows that are being parodied in this episode.
    • The dramatic moment with Daryl revealing that he has a load-bearing wall before Randy eventually tears it down also parodies a commonly featured dramatic scene of unexpectedly finding a load-bearing wall in many houses flipping shows.
  • Jim Bob plays a country version of Kendrick Lamar's "Humble".
    • During the live-tweet for this episode, it was stated that "Humble" was picked because it is one of Trey's daughter's favorite songs.
  • The song that Alexa plays at Crunchy's, "Turk Our Durr" by Joni Mitchell, is a parody of "Help Me" by Joni Mitchell.
  • The guys at Crunchy's Micro Brew are drinking John Adams, a parody of the Sam Adams brand of beer.
  • The punching bag Randy is using says "Everblast", a parody of the MMA equipment company Everlast.

Continuity

Goofs

The 2nd floor windows are bigger and have window sills on the top.
  • There is a shot of Sharon with makeup on and a different hairstyle than what she normally has the first time White People Renovating Houses is shown.
  • On the original airing and its initial release on Hulu, the audio was improperly mixed resulting in the dialogue being drowned out by the music and sound effects. This has subsequently been fixed.
  • The windows on the 2nd floor of Cartman's house are unusually bigger than the ones on the first floor, and they also window sills on the top.
  • In the shot of CtPaTown, the Grand Opening sign is still on Nueva Familia.
  • When Cartman is in his room talking to the virtual assistants, they are all functional despite not being plugged in.
    • Also, there are Xbox 360s mixed in with the other assistants. Technically, the Xbox 360 is not a virtual assistant. The Kinect accessory can perform virtual assistant-like abilities, although the Kinect accessory is not shown. And even though, Butters' mouth is not moving and laugh.
