90s reference

I'm confused on how that isn't a clear Self-referential joke to South park's beginings in the 90s, they do an whole Comic timing pause & have the kids stare at each other to infer the confusion & humor over being asked the question. Shows like the Simpsons do the same set up constantly considering its age & episode count, how exactly is this not the same type of joke?
