Trivia

An adult copy of Bill Allen briefly seen in the lab scene.
  • Although Steve Irwin is killed by the train crash in this episode, in "Hell on Earth 2006", he is shown to have died as he did in real life; from a stingray that is hanging out his heart.
  • When Kyle falls in the hole, Stan says "Good job Cartman! You killed Kyle!", allowing Kenny a rare opportunity to deliver the "You bastard!" line. Later, Stan says "Oh my God! They revived Gorak!", and Kyle adds "You bastards!"
  • There is a scene in the episode which parodies Terrance and Scott calling each other dicks. That scene is Stan and Kyle doing the famous, "You're a dick!" quote.
  • In the "Go God Go" two-parter, Kyle says that freezing yourself would not work at all, despite knowing that Larry was in fact an unfrozen person.
  • During the lab scene with the citizens trying to understand what Larry says, there is a person who bears a striking resemblance to Bill Allen, with the same clothes, the same haircut and the same color scheme.
  • When Kyle falls down the hole, Stan seems to be unfazed by his supposed death unlike other episodes when Kyle nears death like "Cartmanland" and "Cherokee Hair Tampons".
  • While playing "spuds out", Officer Barbrady states "b-l-o-o spells blue" while stuttering. This suggests that he is not all the way literate after "Chickenlover".
  • This is the first episode to feature frontal nudity, although the penis is blurred out.

References to Popular Culture

  • This episode parodies the late Steve Irwin and his television series The Crocodile Hunter.
  • When Stan and Kyle come across the ice man, Stan says he saw a movie where "The old cavemen get frozen, and then people discover them and make them their caveman friends." This is a reference to the film Encino Man.
  • Cartman confuses the situation with the film version of the musical Grease. Cartman mentions the film starred John Travolta and "that French chick" who "did it all summer long" and sang about "Greased Lightning".
  • Before thawing out the prehistoric ice man, Mephesto theorizes he may be a Neanderthal or an Australopithecus from the Paleolithic era.
  • "Steve" is wearing clothing from Eddie Bauer, which Mephesto claims has not been popular since 1996.
  • Officer Barbrady has the boys play 'Spuds up' to determine who gets to see "Steve".
  • "Steve's" habitat is full of references to the year 1996:
    • The song "The Sign" and "All That She Wants" by pop group Ace of Base is playing in the background. These was from their album Happy Nation.
    • The bedspread in the habitat is from the 1996 Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
    • There are two movie posters on the wall, one for Fargo and the other for Independence Day, both of which came out in 1996.
    • The "Re-elect Clinton" sign is a reference to the 1996 presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole.
    • The headline for the South Park News that is on the side of the computer desk says "Flight 800 plunges into the sea". This is in reference to a Boeing 747 plane crash that occurred in 1996 near East Moriches, New York.
  • "Steve" accesses the internet to which Mephesto comments was "still not very big in his time, so the Web frightens and confuses him." Public use of the internet boomed between 1996 and 1997.
  • When "Steve" turns on the television the Aussie Hunter states that the average grizzly bear is stronger than ten Morgan Freemans.
  • "Steve" is thrown into a frenzy when he hears that the Atlanta Falcons are going to the Super Bowl. This is historically accurate; in 1999 the Atlanta Falcons faced the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII.
  • Kyle states that he named the ice man Steve after Steve Austin from the television series, The Six Million Dollar Man due to the resemblance.
  • When "Steve" happens across the shop Tele's and looks on one of the TVs, he sees Marilyn Manson singing his own rendition of "Stinky Britches". This parody of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson is modeled after his appearance for his 1998 album Mechanical Animals which featured Manson on the cover with his hair dyed red, wearing prosthetic breasts and with his body covered in latex paint, giving him an androgynous look.
  • Kyle confuses "Steve's" plight with that of Frosty in the Christmas special Frosty the Snowman.
  • At the end of the episode Cartman says "Be very very quiet. I'm hunting crocodiles, hahahahahaha." This is in parody of the Looney Tunes character Elmer Fudd, who usually says "Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits" while out hunting for Bugs Bunny.
  • A113 is the tail number on the helicopter "Steve" flies off in at the end. This is a reference to Pixar, as this is a code used in all of their films.

Continuity

Goofs

  • At the beginning of the episode, the boys are watching TV in Cartman's living room, but when they leave, they are in Stan's living room.
  • Dr. Mephesto claims to have created a habitat for "Steve" that is 1996-oriented. When we first see the habitat, the song being played is "All That She Wants", by Ace of Base. However, this song was released as a single in the United States in late summer of 1993 and reached its peak on the charts in 1994.
  • "Steve" was surprised his wife was cheating on him, yet since he and his wife were together 8 years and he was gone for 3, it seems odd he never knew his wife was pregnant with her 8-year-old son.

Kenny's Death

  • Kenny is crushed to death while he is on the moving walkway.

Italian (2nd)

    • The dubbed name for Larry is 李ㄢ (Lǐ ān), parodying Taiwanese film director Ang Lee. The names adopted by Stan and Kyle, on the other hand, parody filmmakers Edward Yang and Wong Kar-wai respectively.
    • The federal agents plan to use Larry for political party negotiations.
  • When Stan and Kyle come across the ice man, Stan mentions a movie with the character Mr. Freeze, referring to the 1997 superhero film Batman & Robin.
  • Rather than getting confusing with another film, Cartman is reminded of a made-up film, which tells a story of a man who has sexual interests with another man, keeping a confession note inside a glass bottle which was eventually picked up by a woman. Characters involved in this "film" parody Hong Kong actors Tony Leung, Jackie Chan, and actress Shu Qi.
  • The special news report on the prehistoric ice man reports that Larry probably lives near a research facility in Nangang, a district in Taipei, Taiwan.
  • Changes during the exhibition include:
    • Dr. Mephesto explaining that the music played in the background is performed by the New Formosa Band.
    • Dr. Mephesto explaining that while Larry is using the computer, the latter seems to be overwhelmed by the internet's connection speed, rather than getting frightened by the Web itself.

Portuguese (Brazil)

  • The news report aired in the exhibition covers soccer instead of American football. Here, the reporter makes references to the Brazilian club Esporte Clube Juventude.
