  • Stan breaks the fourth wall when he mentions that people now remember things from previous episodes.
  • Inside the Papa John's, real life images of its founder, John Schnatter can be seen near the window and by the register.

References to Popular Culture

  • The title and plot reference the anti-gluten diet fad combined with the Ebola epidemic in West-African countries, both current events at the time the episode aired.
    • As an added gag, certain names in the credits have "GF" next to their name, indicating that they too meet the FDA's "gluten-free" standards.
  • Despite the name, Ebola is never mentioned in the episode.
    • In fact it has never been mentioned throughout the entire series.
  • Cartman's dream and Randy's arrestation references Stephen King's book The Stand and its 1994 mini series adaptation. Aunt Jemima plays the role of Mother Abagail.
  • Stan asks Wendy if she still wants to go see "that stupid Maze Runner movie," a reference to The Maze Runner, which was released in theaters 12 days before this episode aired.
  • New Zealand pop singer Lorde is mentioned several times and satirized when Randy performs as her at the boys' party.
  • Pop song "Get the Party Started" by Pink is played before the boys' interview on WSPIC 88.3 FM.
  • The death scene of the scientist is a reference to the movie Prometheus, at the beginning of which an alien dissolves in a similar manner after ingesting a similar black goo from a similarly small receptacle.
    • The effects of gluten (melting the body and blowing your penis off) also reference the 1987 movie Street Trash in which a case of old booze has the same effect on the hobos who drink it.
  • The head of the USDA, Tom Vilsack, was the actual Secretary of Agriculture at the time the episode aired. He was replaced in 2017, but was reinstated to the same position by President Biden in 2021.

Continuity

  • This episode is a continuation of "Go Fund Yourself" since the boys confront the school students who are pissed off as they left to create a start-up company and told everyone to "go fuck themselves".
  • This is the second time Stan and Wendy have broken up, as well as the second time they have gotten back together. They previously split in "Raisins" and reconciled in "The List".
  • Kenny appears to have finally been able to afford the school's gym uniform as he is wearing a proper gym shirt in class.
  • A box of Cheesy Poofs can be seen in the Marsh's cupboard as they remove items with gluten. It was last seen in Season Fifteen's "A History Channel Thanksgiving".
  • A poster for Tween Wave band, Gersploosh, can be inside WSPIC. It was last seen in Season Fifteen's "You're Getting Old".
  • In later episodes, Gluten drinks can be seen in various episodes such as "Freemium Isn't Free" and "Cock Magic".

Deleted Scenes

  • The boys are at lunch and Cartman says that the brownies in their lunch taste horrible. Without thinking, Stan gets up from the lunch table and talks to Clyde about why did he tell Wendy Stan will be "swimming in bitches", Stan says he did not mean to share that with Wendy and then says that he haves to tell Wendy that was a lie. Kyle tries to stop them fighting until Clyde mentions that their Kickstarter would not go anywhere as their fight, so Kyle punched Clyde. Tolkien and Jimmy saw it happen and so Craig and Jimmy start fighting with them while the kids in the cafeteria chant. Tolkien was about to join the fight, but Cartman punches him to the ground. The next scene is the boys who fought, except Jimmy and Kenny, in Mr. Mackey's office talking about what caused the fight, but instead tells Clyde what did he bring to lunch. He says he brought a peanut butter sandwich and pretzels and Mackey responded with a long "Mmkaayyy!!"
  • Stan reads his emotional essay to the class about the crisis, talking about the people in the town thinking it is no big deal, and saying about their loved ones are gone, except for Randy. The class stays in silence but Craig speaks out that everybody hates him now.
