A realistic rendering of the boys

• For the first time, realistic drawings of the kids are shown. Nico Agnone, a relative of one of the animation crew members, was the model for Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski.
• Excluding Brazil, this episode did not air in Latin America, however the episode was aired after the launch of the Latin American version of Comedy Central and made it available on Netflix with no censorship.
• The Mexican space agency is called "MASA", which is also the name of a traditional Mexican corn dough.
  • The real-life Mexican space agency is the Agencia Espacial Mexicana, but when this episode aired, it was Satélites Mexicanos.
• The A.L.F. leader bears a resemblance to PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk.
• Strangely, Kevin Stoley and Pip Pirrip do not appear as part of the boys' extended group in this episode.
• The trucker who gave the boys a lift has a strong resemblance to redneck at the bar he was smoking in "Butt Out" The model of both are identical, the only difference are the colors of hair and clothing.
• The rockets used by "MASA" are older US Rockets, with the Rocket used at the end of the episode being inspired by the Saturn 1B, which had been used for earlier Apollo test missions despite the Saturn V being used to land people on the moon.

References to Popular Culture

• Stan says that the Russians were going to take 'that NSYNC guy' to space, referring to the plan for Lance Bass to be taken to the International Space Station, which fell through.
• The title "Free Willzyx" and the main story of freeing a whale is a reference to the movie Free Willy.
• Betsy Donovan likens Eric Cartman's realistic drawing to Dakota Fanning.
• The concept of celestial communicating whale may be a reference to Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home.
• The name of the orca, Jambu is a reference to Shamu, the stage name given to several orcas used as the main star for the Shamu Theatrical Shows at the various SeaWorld theme parks.
• Brian mentions the FOX reality TV show Trading Spouses.

Continuity

• The whale present on the moon has since become a recurring joke, being shown whenever there is a shot on the moon. Willzyx can been seen in "201" and "Coon 2: Hindsight".

Goofs

• When the announcer says "Bunch of retards" at the end of the whale show, the audio does not match up with the mouth.
• After the whale show was over, the boys should have been drenched from being in the splash zone and being shown in wet clothing before. However, all of them were completely dry except for Stan. Soon after, when it zooms in on the boys more, Stan is shown to be completely dry as well.
• Before the gunfight, as the bike-cops (one of whom kneels) order A.L.F. to put away the guns, the moving van driver is first seen to step away and later standing next to them again, as the other one kneels too. Then the leader shouts "Save the whale!" and the shoot-out begins. From that moment, the driver completely disappears. The leader drives the van and he is also not among the shot people who are left on the road.
• After the whale is sent to the moon and the boys arrive at Kyle's house, on the other side of the street, there is a red and a blue house, both with the same number as Kyle's (1002).
• Orcas, while commonly referred to as whales, are actually classified as species of dolphin.
• When the boys sneak into the park to save Jambu, Timmy says his name quietly, but his mouth does not move.
• The trucker who gave the boys a lift had been shot dead. However he later appeared in the episode "Imaginationland" giving Cartman a lift.
• Kyle tells the ALF leader that they are taking Willzyx to Tijuana. They then drive through the U.S. / Mexico border checkpoint in Arizona and reach Tijuana in a short amount of time. Tijuana is located along the western coast of Mexico with the nearest major U.S. city being San Diego, California. If Kyle and the others entered from the Arizona checkpoint closest to California and Mexico (Yuma, Arizona), it would still take over 3 hours to drive from there to Tijuana.
