Trivia

  • The scene where Cartman talks about his "dream" mirrors the opening scene of "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" and the reused scene in "Cancelled".
  • After Cartman falls off the bull and looks to be dead in the snow, Kenny says "Oh my God they killed Cartman!" which may be in reference to the creators' original short, Jesus vs. Frosty, where "Kyle" said that Frosty killed "Kenny" while the boy actually resembled Cartman.
  • When the boys play with the Terrance and Phillip dolls, they pretend to be searching for treasure. Terrance and Phillip were shown to enjoy looking for treasure in "Terrance and Phillip in Not Without My Anus".
  • This is the first episode to use an animal as its episode icon.
  • This is the first episode in which Cameron appears. He later makes another appearance in "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow" as one of Jimbo's friends.
  • There is a close-up shot of a bull's testicles. This makes the episode the series' first depiction of uncensored genitalia (albeit non-human ones).
  • Clyde makes a cameo in the Running of the Cows, being the only child participant. Annie and Bebe can also be seen in the crowd watching.
  • Dolls similar to Polly Prissypants appear hanging from a booth titled "Prizes".

References to Popular Culture

  • Cow Days is a reference to Burro Days, a tradition celebrated in Fairplay, Colorado.
  • The Cow Days statue is fashioned after Gautama Buddha, the spiritual leader and founder of the Buddhist religion.
  • One of the carnival games on the Cow Days fairgrounds is one where you have to get balls into the mouth of actress Jennifer Love Hewitt. Around the time this episode aired, Jennifer Love Hewitt was at the height of her popularity for her roles in the television series Party of Five and the 1997 slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer.
  • The Running of the Cows is a parody of the Running of the Bulls. The Running of the Bulls is an annual event that dates back to 14th century Spain. It is now practiced in Spain, France, Mexico and various other locations in the world. It's gained controversy in recent years with the advent of animal rights groups such as PETA calling for its banning.
  • The Chamber of Farts and the Line Ride are a commentary on amusement park rides, especially those at Disney theme parks. They are notorious for the exceedingly long lines for short rides.
  • After finally getting a ball into Jennifer Love Hewitt's mouth, the carnival ride operator offers the boy the choice between the Barbie pocket mirror and the Bon Jovi toothpick. Barbie is of course the popular doll for girls that has been lining toy departments since 1959. Bon Jovi is in reference to either musician Jon Bon Jovi or his band Bon Jovi which was formed in 1983. They are best known for their 1986 album Slippery When Wet.
  • The Cow Cult that forms is confronted by the FBI and then ultimately commits suicide when they forcibly take away the Cow Day clock. This is likely a parody of two topical high-profile cults during the 1990s. The first would be the clash between Branch Davidian and the ATF and FBI in 1993. It was a 90-day stand-off when the religious cult refused to allow the ATF searched their Waco, Texas compound after they obtained a warrant based on weapons and child abuse allegations. The stand off ended violently with the FBI storming the compound in tanks and the Branch Davidian followers purposely lighting fires. Seventy four Davidian worshipers died in the conflict including their leader David Koresh. The incident is referred to as the Waco Siege. The other recent high-profile cult incident involved the followers of Heaven's Gate a religious movement that believed that humanity was the product of UFO's and that the Earth was about to be "recycled". They reasoned that in order to survive this they needed to join with the comet Hale-Bopp during a period when it was brightest when viewed from Earth. To do this they all committed suicide on March 26, 1997. This would later be parodied in the episodes "Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub" and "Super Best Friends".
  • While Cartman still thought he was Ming Li, the Vietnamese prostitute, he apparently got a spanking from actor Leonardo DiCaprio. During the time this episode came out, Leonardo DiCaprio was riding the popularity generated from his role in the 1997 film Titanic.
  • Ming Li's clothing and phrases such as "Me so horny. Me love you long time." and "Sucky-sucky" are reference to the Da Nang hooker from the 1987 war film, Full Metal Jacket.

Goofs

  • When describing the vacation that the couple will be going on, the game show's announcer says they will be staying at the South Park Hotel, while the screen clearly shows it as a motel. This may be intentional, as they may be glossing over the cheapness of the prize.
  • When the man sells the dolls to Kyle and Stan, both dolls are blue and have black hair. But in the next shot, one doll is red and still has black hair, while the other is still blue but now has blonde hair.
  • When Kyle is playing the Jennifer Love Hewitt game for the second time he throws two of his balls before declaring shenanigans. Kyle is still holding his third ball right before he calls out shenanigans, but after Officer Barbrady comes over, the ball is back on the counter.
  • There are two Annies and white Tolkiens watching the festival.
  • After receiving money from Kyle's parents, Kyle states that they have $15 between them. They spend 3 tickets ($1/ticket) on the Chamber of Farts. They are told that the Line Ride will be 7 tickets, but after going through it they are only charged 5 tickets. They then purchase a Line Ride photo for $3. Cartman then states that they have $3 remaining. This is incorrect math regardless of whether the Line Ride was 5 or 7 tickets.
    • $15 − (3 + 7 + 3) = $2
    • $15 − (3 + 5 + 3) = $4
  • While the boys walk by by a man in uniform with his wife, they walked in a very stiff manner than usual.
  • When the cows are seen with the statue, they were seen in lanes. As the cows got surrounded by the FBI, they were separated before appearing again in lanes.
  • When Cartman is on the bull before riding in the rodeo, he is wearing his normal brown pants in a couple of shots. This is a continuity error as he wears a fuchsia skirt the rest of the time as Ming Lee.
  • While Mary is in her cell with Tom she can be seen watching the bull riding contest.
  • Cartman participates in the bull riding contest under his Ming Lee persona; the announcers and crowd refer to him as such. But the scoreboard for him still reads "Eric Cartman."
  • When the limousine drives away, there is an animation error; as it leaves the shot the rear of the car leaves and enters the frame several times.
  • Despite Kenny being dead, he is seen with the boys later on in the episode for a few seconds, then is not seen anymore for the rest of the episode.

Kenny's Death

  • He is impaled by the horns of the bull Cartman is riding.

Hidden Visitors

  • Two visitors appear in this episode:
    • When Kyle tells Kenny to give the man at the ball stand his food stamps, a visitor appears in the FREAKS tent behind them for a split second before the scene slides over to Kenny.
    • Driving the limo at the end of the episode.

Common

  • There are no price reductions for the Line Ride in the French and Mandarin Chinese dubbings.

Cantonese

  • During the game show, Mary's wishes of going to Hawaii or Tahiti are changed to Japan or Australia respectively.
  • All rides and items in the Cow Days event are priced in dollars instead of tickets.
  • All dialogs by Cartman during his trauma are translated to intellgible Mandarin Chinese.
  • Cartman is described as a prostitute from mainland China instead of Vietnam. He is never refered as "Ming Lee".
  • The soldier which Cartman came across is refered by the latter as "同志" (tóng zhì, "comrade").
  • Cartman's quotes of "sucky sucky ten dollar" during the bull riding contest are changed to "大减价,全部七块" ("Big sale, all for seven dollar").

Mandarin Chinese

  • List of miscalculations in this dubbing:
    • The price of the Toss-a-Ball game is set at $50 for 3 balls, while the grand prize for the rodeo maintains at $5,000. However, when Kyle is determining how much the boys could play if they win the rodeo, he works out to 100 sets for a total of 3,000 balls.
    • After receiving money from Sheila, Kyle states that the boys have $200 between them. Three tickets ($20/ticket) are spent at the Chamber of Farts, seven on the Line Ride, and another $40 for the Line Ride Photo, leaving the boys with $30. This would work out to a total of $270 instead.

Notes

  1. The title is paired with the suffix of "ウッシッシ", which is a play on "牛" (translation: Cow) and an onomatopoeia for smiling upon performing a good job.
